The Famous Five

The Famous Five!Being a teacher is a wonderful job. One day  I will talk about this more deeply. 🙂 However, one of the greatest aspects is that you are always in direct contact with many of those things that you liked when you were a kid. Like many of you, I have always loved reading. So I am very happy to know that some of you have already discovered a series of books that I used to love: The Famous Five by Enid Blyton.

These novels feature the adventures of a group of young children — Julian, Dick, Anne and George (her real name is Georgina) — and their dog Timmy. The stories always take place in the children’s school holidays. Every time they meet, they get caught up in an adventure, the location of which varies from book to book.

Enid Blyton died in 1968 but remains one of the best-known and best-loved writers of children’s stories. She has over 600 children’s books to her credit, including the Famous Five series, the Secret Seven series and the Malory Towers series.

Enid Blyton wrote 21 Famous Five books; in chronological order they are:

  1. Five on a Treasure Island
  2. Five Go Adventuring Again
  3. Five Run Away Together
  4. Five Go to Smuggler’s Top
  5. Five Go Off in a Caravan
  6. Five on Kirrin Island Again
  7. Five Go Off to Camp
  8. Five Get Into Trouble
  9. Five Fall Into Adventure
  10. Five on a Hike Together
  11. Five Have a Wonderful Time
  12. Five Go Down To The Sea
  13. Five Go To Mystery Moor
  14. Five Have Plenty Of Fun
  15. Five on a Secret Trail
  16. Five Go to Billycock Hill
  17. Five Get Into a Fix
  18. Five on Finniston Farm
  19. Five Go to Demon’s Rocks
  20. Five Have a Mystery To Solve
  21. Five Are Together Again

As you can see, Five on a treasure island is the very first Famous Five adventure. In this story there’s a shipwreck off Kirrin Island, but where’s the treasure? The Five are on the trail, looking for clues… but they’re not alone and time is running out…

Don’t miss it!

In 1978 and 1979 Southern Television produced a TV series based on The Famous Five. I’m sure your parents will remember it 🙂 Here you can see the opening:
